While there has been a substantial emphasis on infrastructure-level cloud transformation, there has been a positive progression towards business-focused transformation.

Are new technology-focused use cases like bitcoin, smart cities, 3D printing, driverless vehicles dominating traditional industries? To understand the current state of industry sectors and domain-based use case representation in open source and cloud, we analyzed the top 1 million public repositories across the major providers and APIs from hyperscale cloud providers.

Our Top Takeaways Analyzing Industry Use Cases in Libraries and APIs

The overall presence of industry use cases in libraries, repositories, package managers, and cloud API providers is 14.48%.

The Media and Telecom industry propelled by social media, and content-based solutions is a clear leader with almost 50% share in industry use cases across all providers and verticals.

The Learning and Institutions focused industry comes at a respectable second with a 19% share. Technology tutorials and Edtech platforms primarily drive this.

Financial Services at 13% comes in at third. Interestingly, capital markets and payments dominate over new-age fintech use cases.

Retail at 8%, Manufacturing and Utilities at 6%, Travel and Transportation at 3%, and Healthcare at 1% constitute the other notable industry use cases. Though the Manufacturing and Utilities industry has multiple new-age use cases across IoT, Driverless Auto, Alternative Energy, the volumes are lower.

Cloud APIs contain 32.6% industry use case focused APIs, whereas Repositories contain only 8.7% industry use cases indicating a strong industry vertical and domain affinity in cloud solutions.

The top 3 sub domains are Media and Entertainment, Education, and Capital Markets.

It is heartening to see a healthy availability of reusable domain use cases across open source, repositories, and cloud APIs. The shift towards industries in the cloud is a positive indication of business-focused transformation. We should see this trend increasing in the coming years.
