Meta confirms decentralized Twitter rival! A significant step towards decentralizing big-tech social media.

Reports suggest that Meta is working on an ActivityPub protocol-based platform, under the Instagram brand (codenamed ‘P92’), for sharing text updates.

Decentralized, federated, open social networks provide a robust alternative to big-tech networks. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for you to have the option to select from various social network profile providers or even host your own server? You can then interact with users on different social networks without having to join every one of them. In other words, users from various social websites can communicate with each other seamlessly through standard protocols while having control and portability on their content. This can especially avoid monopoly in regulation.

Meta’s choice of ActivityPub puts them in the ecosystem of a large and growing “Fediverse” of interconnected servers, a recommended W3C standard that Mastodon uses. Companies, including Flipboard, Medium, Tumblr, and possibly Flickr, have committed to embracing the ActivityPub standard. However, the Jack Dorsey-backed Bluesky is betting on its AT Protocol.

Not just Twitter-style networks, there are federated alternatives inspired by LinkedIn, Good Reads, Instagram, Reddit, and many more. Explore and create applications for your ActivityPub-based federated social network ideas from this kandi kit on open source federated apps.
